Following a two week residency at Los Gázquez, an art and ecology residency, supported by University of the Arts London, Matt Parker produced a short and simple stereo soundscape composition that reflects his journey from the urban bustle of London, to the not-so-quiet solitude at El Cortijada de Los Gázquez, in an alpine desert, living at 1000m above sea level in the Parque Natural Sierra María – Los Vélez.
Using just a small selection of his recordings, the album was put together to mark the end of the residency and to playback the familiar and not-so-familiar sounds that surrounded the residents of Los Gázquez during their everyday off-grid lives.
As Parker struggled constantly to deal with his own obsession with the internet, being cut off from everything for two weeks, he grappled with the vibrations of wildlife, geology, agriculture, anthrophony and delved into the sonorous qualities of off-grid sustainable technologies including wind-turbines and photovoltaics.
Sound include airplanes, cars, buses, backup generators, crickets, eagles, owls, dogs, goats, sheep, turbines, solar panels, wind, flip flops, computer games, food, sweat, tears and joy as Parker attempted to come to terms with his unrelenting addiction towards being online amidst one of the most scenic and glorious surroundings of southern Europe.
